Business and Markets Major – University of British Columbia – Vancouver Campus, Vancouver

How do we tackle starvation and food insecurity when the most industrialized nations waste 30% of all food produced? How do taxes, tariffs, climate change, and green business practices affect the global food system and markets? These are just some of the questions students can tackle in UBC’s brand new Business and Markets major within the Bachelor of Science in Food & Resource Economics.

An Interdisciplinary Curriculum

As part of the Business & Markets major, students will take courses from the faculty of Land and Food Systems alongside courses from UBC’s Vancouver School of Economics and Sauder School of Business. In their first two years, students gain a foundation in applied economics and data analytics before taking upper-year courses in food markets, international trade, and business, graduating ready to employ economic and business models to tackle real-world food challenges.

Career Pathways and Real-World Experience

Graduates of the program will be ready to work in all areas of this field, from agri-business to government and NGOs, tackling environmental and food-related challenges of international trade. In addition, this small program builds strong relationships between students and professors creating more opportunities for mentorship and participation in professor-supervised research projects before graduation.

Responding to a Changing World

With growing talk of tariffs, supply chain disruptions, and our globalized economy, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic and the current Trump administration, this program is uniquely situated to tackle growing international realities. This is a chance to look beyond the general sciences to see how to apply that knowledge to pressing social and economic situations.
