Bachelor of Design in Product Design Kwantlen Polytechnic University (Surrey, British Columbia)

Ever dream of designing a product and seeing it through to production and marketing? KPU’s unique 4-year design program prepares students to work as designers and entrepreneurs, to solve problems through design, whether that be how to keep people warm during outdoor rescue operations or creating mobility devices that allow disabled athletes to thrive in their sports.

KPU’s program has a particular focus on recreational gear and technical goods, sportswear and accessories, protective, safety and rescue equipment. Students also explore product design in medical, industrial and technological contexts as well as everyday consumer goods. Students are grounded in a foundation of practical design principles and further engage with manufacturing and marketing to learn not only how to create products but to bring them to market.

Students work with industry-leading companies to design products they need, while taking academic courses in areas from socio-cultural issues in design to computer fundamentals and learning about the production cycle. Some examples include a second-year design studio class that partnered with OHM Bicycles in North Vancouver to create an interface for using GPS and monitoring speed, heart rate, etc.. while riding, as well as a cooling vest for paralympic rugby athletes as part of their partnership with Canadian Sport Institute.

British Columbia is the fourth-largest design hub in North America and there is a growing need for people with vision and bold ideas to move our world forward through designing more usable  and efficient products. KPU’s three themes of: Creativity & Innovation, Leadership, and Technology come together throughout the program to help launch careers in design.

Students interested in this program apply with a portfolio of their work with finalists selected for interviews.
