Bachelor of Arts – Urban Worlds Major ↗ – Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, British Columbia)
SFU is launching a new interdisciplinary major for Fall 2024 centred around the urban environment and its vast impacts on the social sciences, issues of design, art and culture, technology and environmental sustainability, and beyond. The new BA in Urban Worlds is jointly offered by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Environment to equip students with the training and background needed to be leaders and innovators in a future world that is growing more urban and where urban centers control global decisions and their repercussions.
“With over half the world’s population living in urban spaces, cities matter. They produce, reflect, and amplify most of the dynamics, potential, and problems of global society. With planetary pressures like population growth and climate change, urban spaces need to be more resilient and sustainable for society to thrive in a turbulent world.”
SFU reports that future employability is a major focus of the program which includes practicum options as well as a fourth-year capstone project that partners with the City of Vancouver’s City Studio and the City of New Westminster.
Students will complete the BA either through the Faculty of Arts and Sciences or the Faculty of the Environment. The first year is a foundation year where all majors take the same courses including “Urban Change,” “Introduction to Indigenous Studies, “Introduction to Planning,” and SFU’s brand new course “What is a City?” For 2nd and 3rd years, students choose from one of two streams to pursue their interests, either in Urban Studies (Faculty of Arts & Sciences) or Urban Change (Faculty of the Environment) before coming back together with members of the other stream to complete capstone projects.
In addition to being ready to pursue a career in urban planning, government, sustainability, business development, and emergency management, among others, program graduates are eligible for accelerated admission into SFU’s Master’s programs in Geography or Urban Studies.
