This month, we sat down with Melodie Tomiyama, one of our office managers, to learn more about her role at Options.
Tell us a little about yourself and your role at Options Solutions.
I am the office manager at our South Surrey office, but I also help with the phone lines and scheduling for our South Granville & West Vancouver offices.
What do you enjoy most about working at Options?
I enjoy the client relationships most. I am lucky to work at a place where the vast majority of our clients use our services repeatedly over the years. Often students have a sibling or cousin, so I get to know the entire family. It’s great to hear how the first child is doing in university, and helping the second child with their post-secondary applications. Currently, my own children attend university so I can commiserate with our families on the trials and tribulations of high school & varsity life.
What is the value of engaging Options’ services?
Both my children worked with an educational consultant before I started working here and it was an invaluable experience. Using Options Solutions was a huge time saver and anxiety reliever for my family. We received personal attention and support through the high school years and beyond. It’s a great feeling knowing that a professional consultant is helping your child discover possible career goals and guiding them through the overwhelming and often competitive university admissions process.
What is that wise saying – “To be forewarned is forearmed: to be prepared is half the victory.”
What’s been your biggest success or learning opportunity at Options?
Springtime is so rewarding; we get to hear about all the different offers from the schools that our students applied to. From US schools to direct entry UK medical schools to local institutions, we get to celebrate all of our students’ achievements.
What’s something people may not know about you?
Many moons ago, during my university years, I worked as a hostess/cashier and answered the box office phone lines at Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Club in Calgary. It was awesome! I met all the comedians, watched the shows, and foresaw the future successes of many Canadian stand-up comedians including Norm Macdonald, Harland Williams, and Brent Butt. From the exposure, I developed an appreciation for more edgy performances.
