1. Start early
Brainstorming is an essential first step in the common app process. If there’s anything we’ve learned about brainstorming, it’s that it takes time. Set yourself up for success by starting early. Give yourself time to work through multiple ideas and themes. Sometimes your first idea is your best idea, but often the most compelling topics arise through thorough brainstorming.
2. Talk to your friends and family
Ask yourself: Who knows you best? Your family, friends, teachers, and coaches can be a great resource when you’re brainstorming. The people around you can often observe qualities in you that you might not necessarily see. Therefore, have a conversation with some of the important people in your life. You might be surprised by the stories or values they help you come up with!
3. Practice self-reflection
How do you spend your time? What are your values or beliefs? Who is important to you? Self-reflection is one of the most important aspects of the common app process. But there’s a reason we suggest you “practice” self-reflection: it often feels unnatural at first. You might not have spent much time thinking or writing about yourself in this way. Our biggest recommendation? Keep at it. Self-reflection will feel more natural the more you do it. The next time you’re out for a walk or brushing your teeth, try asking yourself the questions we outlined above.
4. Consider your story
While you want to put your best foot forward, the common app essay is not a laundry list of all of your accomplishments. Instead you want to consider your story (not your whole life story, but a slice of it). In other words, you’ll want to infuse your essay with authenticity, vulnerability, and a narrative arc. This is your chance to express yourself to the university admissions officers in your own voice.
