Spring is a time when grade 12 students are finding out about admission decisions from schools and in some cases, waiting to hear from others. That means it can be an exciting, nerve-wracking, and overwhelming time too. At Options, it is undoubtedly one of our favourite times of the year. Here’s why.
“I got in!”
We love receiving the “I got in!” messages from our students. It is so rewarding to see that a student’s hard work at school, in their extra-curricular activities, and in their applications has opened up a world of opportunities for them. When this offer comes from a student’s first-choice school and a student has done all the right work to make that decision, it is as easy as saying ‘yes’. Whether that student joined Options in grade 9 or grade 11, we reflect on the journey they’ve been on to get to that place — realizing their strengths, exploring their interests, taking risks, discovering programs for the first time, preparing applications, and learning more about campuses, student life, and so much more.
“I got in and now what?”
We also love hearing from students who are excited about their offers but are finding the decision to choose one a little harder than they expected. That’s when we can revisit conversations about what they want the next four years to look like, what goals they are working towards, and what will be the right environment for them to thrive in. It may help to look more closely at their first-year courses, residences, and clubs and sports they can join to get a better understanding of their options. They might even consider connecting with a student already in the program to get a different perspective. By weighing out the options, a student can come to a decision they can feel excited and confident about.
“I didn’t get in …”
We can appreciate how hard it is for students to hear the news that they did not get into a program they hoped to, but we are also confident that our students have a plan in place in case that happens. Some schools are hard to get into, some programs are competitive, and sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned. We can follow up with schools, triple-check to-do lists, and start working through plans A, B, and C to reassure students that there is a great program for them and not just one path to get them where they want to go.
“We got this!”
At Options, we pride ourselves on being a source of knowledge, support and guidance to students and families during this exciting, nerve-wracking, and overwhelming time. We are there with practical, timely, and valuable information along with a few “We got this!” words of encouragement. We’re grateful we’ve been able to play a part in this journey, but we also know the journey doesn’t stop at getting that offer and making a decision. Next, students are busy applying for residence, selecting their first-year courses and getting set up with their new bus pass or student card. They may even be applying for some spring scholarship opportunities or looking into which clubs they plan to join on campus. I have to say, this is fun too!
Spring is definitely in the air, which means summer is around the corner and before we know it, September will be here and students will be off to university. They will be ready. Whether you are an Options student wanting to learn more about our university preparation workshops or a family starting to explore, we look forward to hearing from you.
