University of Toronto tops 2012 QS World University Rankings by Subject

Recently, the QS World University Rankings 2012 by Subject* show the University of Toronto on top among Canadian post-secondary institutions on 20 out of 29 subject disciplines. The academic categories compared were grouped under Social Sciences and Management, Natural Sciences, Life Sciences and Medicine, Engineering and Technology, and Arts and Humanities.

Based on data collected and information drawn from close to 50,000 academic and graduate employers, the QS World University Rankings by Subject score each institution’s performance on its academic reputation, employer reputation and research citation, with weightings specific to each subject area.

The University of Toronto posted top 10 world rankings with its highest positions of 7th for Modern Languages and 10th for both English Language & Literature and Environmental Sciences. U of T also placed 11th in Pharmacy & Pharmacology and Philosophy. Recognition in Psychology (13th), Education (13th), History (14th), Computer Science & Information Systems (15th), Sociology (16th), Linguistics (16th), Medicine (17th), Law (19th), Biological Sciences (23rd), Electrical (23rd), Chemical (27th) and Civil Engineering (37th), Mathematics (24th), Statistics & Operational Research (24th), and Materials Sciences (30th) rounded off the university’s top 20 placements in those subject areas.

Two other universities also rivaled UToronto for the spot of the top Canadian institution: University of British Columbia made a respectable showing 7 times with leading Canadian programs of study in Geography (8th), English Language & Literature (tying U of T for 10th place), Earth & Marine Sciences (18th), Politics and International Studies (22nd), Physics & Astronomy (23rd), Chemistry (26th), and Accounting & Finance (35th). McGill University ranked top in Canada for Communication & Media Studies with a ranking of 18th and 45th in the world for Mechanical Engineering.
