The most surprising news from NACAC concerns a significant change to the Common Application, the online undergraduate admission application used by students to apply to nearly 500 different United States and international universities.
The new Common App for 2013 will omit the “topic of your choice” essay prompt, a decision that has sparked debate among school counsellors. Many counsellors worry that students will lose the opportunity to express their creativity if they are asked to write on a specified topic, while other counsellors believe having more limited options for essay topics will level the playing field for applicants.
Other changes to the Common App include strict enforcement of essay lengths and a web-only submission option. All changes go into effect on Aug 1, 2013.
